The 2017 Majors season finally got underway on Dean 1 with an interleague matchup between the Angels and the visiting Braves.  72 degrees and sunny at game time with Jeff Green behind the dish; it’s great to have baseball back!

The Angels handed the ball to veteran 12 year old Matthew Bergquist to start of the 2017 season.  Matthew starting things off strong with a strikeout before Jack Kamin earned a walk and Kyle Daignault, Sam Pergola and Colby Belanger each followed with singles.  Matthew settled back in and got the last two batters to fly out after the Braves put 2 runs on the board.

Colby Belanger took the mound in the bottom of the first for the Braves.  The Angels were able to grind out 2 runs of their own after RBI’s by Ben Griffith and Andrew Miao.  Belanger threw well and got through the inning efficiently with only 12 pitches thrown.

Both teams went scoreless in the second inning as Bergquist and Belanger each settled in to a groove.  Bergquist retired the side with 2 K’s and a groundout while Belanger struck out all three batters he faced.  Well done boys!

Much of the same in the third inning as these two pitchers kept it rolling.  The Braves threatened with singles by Kyle Daignault and Colby Belanger, but Bergquist dug deep and ended the threat by inducing a pop up to the first baseman and striking out the last batter of the inning.  After a leadoff single by Eddy Naras, Belanger again shined and struck out the next three batters to end the bottom of the inning.  After three innings the score remained Braves 2, Angels 2.

In the top of the fourth the Angels sent Max Walther to the mound and he answered the call with an efficient, 10-pitch inning to retire the side on a groundout and 2 K’s.  Connor Mudd led things off for the Angels in the bottom of the fourth with a walk and then Ben Griffith knocked a two-run home run over the left field fence.  Belanger remained poised and he responded with two quick outs before giving up a single to Brad Reynolds.  The Braves defense executed a nice caught stealing play to end the inning.

The Braves got their bats hot in the top of fifth inning and put four quick runs on the board.  Owen Naber led off with a walk and Jack Kamin followed with a single.  Kyle Daignault roped a double into center field that scored two runs and Sam Pergola followed with a walk.  After Colby Belanger hit a sacrifice fly to score another run, Patrick Hastings would hit a single.  Walther dug deep and closed out the inning with a key strike out and fly out to second base.  In the bottom of the fifth the Braves sent Sam Pergola to the mound.  The Angels put together two runs off of a walk by Charlie Goodchild, a single by Max Walther and an RBI groundout by Caleb Juaire.  Heading into the sixth inning it was all tied up at 6-6!

The Braves dug deep and plated two runs in the top half of the sixth on a walk by Jake Kiefer, a single by Owen Naber and a double by Jack Kamin.  The Braves went to hard-throwing Kyle Daignault in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Jeffrey Randazza put together a great at-bat to earn a leadoff walk and Matthew Bergquist followed with a walk of his own.  Connor Mudd scored Randazza with an RBI single and he smartly advanced to second on the throw.  With runners on second and third Ben Griffith hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored both runners to give the Angels the win.

Terrific sportsmanship was displayed on both sides as the Braves and Angels played well in a very entertaining, back-and-forth game to begin the season.  Excellent job boys, have fun and good luck to both teams throughout the season!
