It was beautiful spring evening down at Coolidge 3 pairing two young Minor teams, the Mariners and the Astros, both in search of their first “W.” A game so competitive that it came down to the last pitch.

The Astros sent rookie Colin Desruisseaux to the mound to get things started. In his second appearance this season, Colin mowed down the first three batters he faced throwing just 12 pitches. The Mariners answered with veteran southpaw Ian Taylor. He was more than up to the challenge striking out three Astros on his way to a scoreless first.  End of one …Mariners 0… Astros 0

In the top of the second the Mariners struck first. Ian Taylor and Desmond Nichols got things started with back to back hits to lead off the inning.  An inning that saw the Mariners score twice despite Colin only throwing 20 pitches. In the bottom half of the inning Ian once again struck out three batters, but the Astros were able to manufacture a run of their own. End of two …Mariners 2 …Astros 1

Only 32 pitches into his outing Colin returned to mound in what would be his final inning. He capped off his outstanding performance striking out three of the next four batters he faced, leaving the Astros down just one run. In the bottom of the third the Astros would stage a rally eventually chasing Ian from the game after a terrific night’s work that included 8 strikeouts on 80 pitches. Boden Kuhnel would take over in relief. Boden was efficient with his pitches ending the three run rally with a ground out to third on just 14 pitches. A combination of plate discipline and a key hit by Ivan Wisuri was the difference in the third.  End of three …Astros 4 …Mariners 2

The Astros made a pitching change in fourth turning the ball over to Tim Donohoe. Tim would continue the impressive pitching performance by both teams retiring three of the four batters he faced. The Mariners would also make a pitching change looking to keep it a two run game, and he was up to the task. Desmond Nichols took the ball from Coach Kuhnel and went out and shut down the Astros hitters. End of four …Astros 4 … Mariners 2

Top 5 and the Mariners make things interesting! Tim strolled back out to the bump looking to close things out, but the Mariners would not go away quietly. Boden lead things off with a walk and quickly swiped second base. Then Owen Kerr stepped to the plate and smacked a liner by the third basemen allowing the run to score. Now the Mariners were within a run. Tim would settle down with the fans on their feet and get the final strikeout to end the game.  Final Score ….Astros 4 …Mariners 3

This game was a pitching duel from the jump. Both teams battled hard and made for an exciting Thursday night baseball game. Best of luck to both teams the rest of the reason.
