The Wednesday night late game on Dean 1 had the visiting Orioles facing the Angels and fans were treated to an entertaining, back-and-forth game by the talented players on both teams.

The Angels sent their 9 year-old phenom, Connor Mudd, to the mound to get things started.  The Orioles came out ready to play in first inning and they scored 2 runs off hits by Andrew Peris and Matthew Schofield and a walk by Oliver Canavan.  The Orioles countered with hard throwing Andrew Peris taking the mound to begin the game.  The Angels answered with 2 runs of their own after Matt Bergquist reached base and scored followed by Ben Griffith crossing the plate soon after his RBI double.  After 1 the score was 2-2.

Mudd held the Orioles offense to 1 run in the top of the second inning after hits by Josh Hamm and Patrick Kane and a walk by Landan Gray.  The Angels plated 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning with hits by Brad Reynolds and Jace Sweetwood, while Max Walther and Zach Bowley each earned walks.  After 2 innings it was Angels 4, Orioles 3.

Andrew Miao made his season pitching debut for the Angels in the top of the third inning and he retired the side with no runs allowed after Andrew Peris and TJ Welch each reached base on walks.  Matthew Schofield took the mound for the Orioles in the bottom half of the inning.  Matthew was throwing hard, and despite a walk by Andrew Miao and a single by Caleb Juaire, Matthew dug deep and held the Angels scoreless.  After 3 innings the score remained 4-3.

Each team scored a run in the fourth inning.  Josh Hamm put together a terrific at bat to earn a walk which allowed him to score on a Patrick Kane RBI single.  Charlie Goodchild earned an important walk of his own for the Angels in the bottom half of the fourth.  Jace Sweetwood would record his second hit of the game and Goodchild eventually scored thanks to his aggressive base running before the side was retired.  After 4 innings it was Angels 5, Orioles 4.

The Orioles stepped on the gas in the top of the fifth inning and scored two runs off of two home runs!  As if he was inspired by Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, Andrew Peris hit a laser to right center and took off running like a race horse!  Before fans could blink Andrew crossed the plate with an inside the park home run… well done Andrew!  Two batters later Matthew Schofield stepped in and belted a solo homer over the center field fence… great swing Matthew!  The Angels found themselves down by a run in the bottom of the fifth when Ben Griffith got things started with a leadoff single.  Andrew Miao was then awarded first base after getting hit by a pitch.  Caleb Juaire stepped in with two men on base and crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a three run home run… congratulations Caleb!  Patrick Kane came on to close out the inning for the Orioles and he did so in fine fashion allowing no further damage despite a hard single up the middle by Zach Bowley.  After 5 innings the score was Angels 8, Orioles 6.

The Angels gave the ball to Max Walther in the top of the sixth.  Oliver Canavan put together a nice at bat and led things off with a hard single to left.  Joe McKenizie reached on another single and before you know it the Orioles have two men on and nobody out.  Max Diaz steps to the plate and he hits a bullet that has double written all over it, however second baseman Brad Reynolds read the ball perfectly and made a terrific shoulder-height catch.  Reynolds quickly saw an opportunity to double-up the runner who left second and he sprinted to the bag to record the double play.  Fantastic job Bradley!  After those theatrics Patrick Kane patiently earned a walk and then Angels pitcher Max Walther dug deep to induce a 6-3 groundout as the final play of the game.

Final score Angels 8, Orioles 6.  The players treated the fans to a very entertaining game and terrific sportsmanship was displayed on both sides of the diamond.  These two ball clubs look forward to meeting each other again at the end of the May, until then good luck to both teams in their upcoming games!
