It was hot and muggy on this fine evening as the Mariners faced off against the Dodgers. It was a battle of teams hungry for a win and it was exciting from the start.

The Mariners came up to bat in the top of the 1st with a new look batting order. Coach Scott Kuhnel’s decision to change things up paid immediate dividends as the Mariners plated 4 runs on 3 hits. Boden Kuhnel and Desmond Nichols set the table with a walk and a single and were knocked in by Ian Taylor. Later in the inning Owen Guelcher drove in a run with an RBI double.

The Dodgers went down 1-2-3 in the first thanks to strikeouts by Rookie Desmond Nichols and some solid defense by Ian Taylor and Boden Kuhnel.….. End of 1st … Mariners 4 ... Dodgers 0.

The Dodgers responded in the top of the 2nd with a 1-2-3 inning of their own. Tysan Dang dazzled on the mound striking out all three batters that he faced.

Dang contributed with his bat by hitting a solid single to lead off the bottom of the inning. Ryan Moss would go on to walk three batters but limited the Dodgers to one run.….. End of 2nd … Mariners 4 ... Dodgers 1.

The Mariners struck again in the top of the 3rd. The bases were loaded quickly after walks to Owen Kerr and Boden Kuhnel and an error on a hard hit ground ball by Desmond Nichols. Ryan Moss then hit a hard ground ball to Tysan Dang who made a great throw to first that wasn’t fielded cleanly. Slugger Ian Taylor stepped up to the plate with no outs and men on 2nd and 3rd and delivered another two run hit with a single to right field. Dang would go on to make two more solid plays around the mound but another run would score before all was said and done.

Moss made quick work of the Dodgers in the bottom half with two strikeouts and a nice play by Ian Taylor on a grounder to short.….. End of 3rd … Mariners 9 ... Dodgers 1.

In the top of the 4th the Mariners threatened early with consecutive walks but were quieted quickly with back to back to back strikeouts by Andrew Senior.

Things got interesting for the Mariners in the bottom of the 5th as Ian Taylor relieved Moss. After a commanding strikeout to lead the inning off Taylor had trouble finding the strike zone. He sandwiched two Ks between 5 walks but managed to limit the damage to one run….. End of 4th … Mariners 9 ... Dodgers 2.

The top of the Mariners lineup came up big again in the top of the 5th. After consecutive walks to Kuhnel, Nichols and Moss the M’s had bases loaded and their big slugger at the plate. True to form Ian Taylor smacked another double to right field, scoring Kuhnel and Nichols. Josh Moody hit a sacrifice grounder to plate Moss and a HBP to Andrew Stoessel would score one more. The Dodgers had a lot of ground to make up coming into their last at bats.

Taylor worked through three walks and an error by the second baseman to get out of the inning with only one run coming across.….. End of 5th … Mariners 13 ... Dodgers 3.

Both teams fought hard but the Mariners came out victorious thanks to an aggressive approach at the plate and some tough-nosed pitching. Ian Taylor was the star with the bat going 3 for 3 with 6 RBI. Boden Kuhnel and Desmond Nichols did a great job getting on base and scored 3 runs each as Coach Kuhnel’s batting order change worked like a charm. The Mariners hope to keep up their winning ways against the Diamondbacks on Sunday and the Dodgers will be looking for their first W against the Reds on Saturday under the lights.
