The weather was hot and so were the bats as the Angels hosted the Athletics on Friday night at Dean Park.  The fans were treated to plenty of action as these two teams would combine for 24 runs before this one was over.

The Angels sent their crafty southpaw Zach Bowley to the mound to get the contest started.  Zach threw an efficient first inning allowing no runs and one hit off the bat of Colby Coghlin.  The A’s countered by sending hard throwing Colby Coghlin to the mound.  The Angels came out swinging and plated 8 runs off of hits by Zach Bowley, Connor Mudd, Ben Griffith, Jeffrey Randazza, Charlie Goodchild and Eddy Naras and a walk by Caleb Juaire.  After 1 the score was Angels 8, A’s 0.

Bowley returned to the mound in the second and the A’s bats got hot.  Andrew Schmitt started things off with a triple, Colin Yeaton was hit by a pitch and Connor Morin and Colby Coghlin each had singles.  By the time the third out was recorded the A’s put up 4 runs and just like that the lead was cut in half.  Drew Conant took the ball for the A’s in the bottom of the second inning and he retired the Angels with no damage done on only 10 pitches.  Nice job Drew!  After 2 innings it was Angels 8, A’s 4.

Bowley pitched well in the third inning allowing the A’s to score only 1 run another triple by Andrew Schmitt and an RBI double by Colin Yeaton.  The Angels got the bats going again in the bottom of the third.  Eddy Naras led off with a single and Connor Mudd, Ben Griffith and Jeffrey Randazza each had hits of their own; after the Angels were retired they had put another 4 runs on the board.  After 3 innings it was Angels 12, A’s 5.

Bowley came back out in the fourth and continued to deal.  Timmy Marshall belted a hard-shot single up the middle but Bowley stayed composed and retired the side without allowing any runs to score.  Colin Yeaton took the mound in the bottom half of the inning for the A’s.  The Angels were able to grind out a couple runs with some patient at-bats and walks from Zach Bowley, Ben Griffith and Caleb Juaire.  After 4 innings it was Angels 14, A’s 5.

Bowley returned in the fifth inning determined to keep dealing, but the A’s had other ideas on their mind.  Andrew Schmitt stayed hot and started things off with a double, his third extra base hit of the night.  Nice job Andrew!  Colin Yeaton followed with a walk and then Shawn Salt delivered a clutch 2 RBI single.  With his pitch count nearing max and the A’s threatening to end his night, Bowley dug deep and induced a 1-6-3 double play to retire the side and end the inning.  The Angels put up 3 runs in the bottom half of the fifth off of walks by Max Walther, Jeffrey Randazza, Eddy Naras before Connor Mudd delivered his game-leading fourth hit of the night.  Final score was Angels 17, A’s 7.

Congratulations to Zach Bowley for pitching a complete game in front of his grandparents who made the trip all the way from Iowa to come see him play.  Good luck to both teams in their upcoming games!
