The Cardinals and Astros got together this past Tuesday night and after a long layoff for the Memorial Day weekend both teams were ready to get back to baseball.

The Astros were the away team and were looking to jump on the Cardinals early.  Jack St Pierre was on the mound for the Cardinals and was working hard.  The first two Astros hitters, Brayden Mahoney and Parker Mulryan earned walks with good patient at-bats.  Colin Desruisseaux followed with a single to load the bases.  Jack struck out the next Astros batter for the first out of the inning.  Tyler Boehnke was hit by a pitch to push the first Astros run across the plate.  Dylan Coran hit a fielder’s choice ground ball back to the mound and was out at first but Dylan did his job and pushed another run across the plate.  Astros batters Ivan Wisuri, Cameron Coran, Timothy Donohoe and Aaron Liu all earned walks to end the inning with 3 more runs scored.

In the home half of the first inning the Cardinals were looking to chip away at the Astros early lead.  Colin Desruisseaux was on the mound for the Astros.  Colin Marques led things off with a single and Owen Parry Cruwys followed with a single of his own.  With one out Patrick O’Toole hit a hard single past the shortstop to score two runs.  Ben Lan followed with another Cardinals single.  With runners on first and second Colin settled down and struck out the next two Cardinals batters.  End of the 1ST:  Astros 5, Cardinals 2.

Owen Parry Cruwys was on the mound for the Cardinals in the second inning and worked three strikeouts around a single by Suhas Bharthepude and a hit-by-pitch to Parker Mulryan.

Colin Desruisseaux was still on the mound for the Astros and made quick work of the Cardinals batters with two K’s and a nice fielding play on a comebacker to the mound.  End of the 2nd:  Astros 5, Cardinals 2.

Owen was getting settled in on the mound for the Cardinals, he struck out the three batters that he faced in the inning on 10 pitches.

Colin Desruisseaux was in a groove of his own and struck out the first batter he faced.  The Astros fielders were ready for the top of the Cardinals order, Colin Marques hit a line drive to left field but Ivan Wisuri was ready and made a great catch.  Colin helped his own cause by catching a popup back to the mound for the third out of the inning.  End of the 3rd: Astros 5, Cardinals 2.

Owen Parry Cruwys was back on the mound in the fourth inning and picked up where he left off,  he again struck out the three batters he faced in the inning.

The Astros brought Colin Desruisseaux back out to pitch one more inning.  Jack St Pierre led things off with a single for the Cardinals.  Patrick O’Toole followed Jack’s single with a homerun to left field to bring the Cardinals to within two runs of the Astros.  After surrendering a single to Ben Lane, Ben’s second hit of the game, Colin once again found his groove and got out of the inning without surrendering any more runs.  End of the 4th: Astros 5, Cardinals 4.

Owen was back for the top of the fifth inning.  The Astros got their bats on the ball this inning but the Cardinals fielders were up to the task.  Three nice fielding plays in the inning, two by Owen and one from Colin Marques kept the Astros runners off the bases.  Owen surrendered a walk in the inning to Suhas Bharthepude but the Cardinals fielding left him stranded at second base.

Tim Donohoe was on the mound in relief for the Astros and made quick work of the Cardinals batters by striking out the side in order.  End of the 5th: Astros 5, Cardinals 4.

The Cardinals sent Owen back to the mound for the last inning.  Owen didn’t disappoint his teammates, he struck out three batters around a single by Colin Desruisseaux.

The Cardinals needed a run to extend the game.  Colin Marques started things off with a single.  Owen Parry Cruwys walked.  With runners on first and second Jack St Pierre hit a groundball to the Astros third baseman who then beat Colin to the bag for the force out at third base, a nice heads up play by the Astros.  With one out Patrick O’Toole hit a double into centerfield scoring two runs (Owen and Jack) to win the game for the Cardinals.  End of the game:  Cardinals 6, Astros 5.

This game had great pitching and fielding by both teams.  Good luck to both teams the rest of the season and into the playoffs.
