A misty Wednesday set the scene for a monster matchup between the 3-1 Nationals and the 3-1 Padres. Patrick Babola took the hill in the top of the first for the Nats.  After a walk and two strikeouts, the Padres mounted a threat as James Flanagan and Louis Rossetti drew walks.  With the bases loaded, Patrick ended it with his 3rd K.
Fireworks and drama littered the bottom of the first.  Cameron Espino doubled, Josh Curtis walked, and Logan Dipilato walked, setting the table.  It was Benbino time as Benjie Rotunno launched a moonshot that just landed in the Coolidge 1 pasture!  This bases clearing triple cleared the bases and gave the Nats a 3-0 lead.  This was followed by key hits from Rishi Prasad and Kevin Lee, scoring Benjie and Sean Mitsis.  The Nats were up 5-0.
The second inning moved quickly as Patrick struck out the side for the Nats.  Jack Costa entered in relief and retired the side, striking out two.  The third inning started well for the Padres as Dennis Moody walked and Jack Costa hit a smash to right field, scoring Dennis and making it 5-1.  Patrick battled through the inning, striking out two more to close.
Jack threw another scoreless inning for the Padres as the game pushed on.  In the bottom of the fourth, some serious drama unfolded.  Patrick earns a put out and gives up a single to Connor Bouffard.  He steps off the mound as the Logan Express takes over.  Logan pitched well but faced a bases loaded situation after walks to Alex Keith and Noah Couture.  Then, Dennis Moody hit a frozen rope that would make Mookie Betts proud – his line drive to left cleared the bases and earned him a home run!   The game was suddenly tied 5-5.
The Logan Express took the mound to start the 5th inning.  With the game on his shoulders, Logan gave up a single to Jack Costa but then retired the next three batters to end the inning.  Big time composure by young Logan, who like many 3rd graders survived his first day of MCAS today.
Jack Costa took the mound again in the bottom of the fifth.  The Nats were finally able to breakthrough against Jack’s excellent pitching.  Key walks by Logan and Benjie started the inning but a hard grounder by George “Herman” Coombs led to a force out as the Padres made a great defensive play.  Two outs, Rishi Prasad at the plate – what happens next?  Rishi hit a missile to right field  - Benjie runs like a Rotunno and rounds the bases, reaching home plate and earning the Nats the victory – 6-5.      What a win!  What a game!  Two quality teams who will be battling all year.
