After a thrilling game on May 16th the Nationals and Padres were back at it again on Monday night to make up an early season rain out and to complete their home and home series.

This time it was a beautiful night for baseball and the home Padres sent Angelo Mcnamara to the hill for his first start of the season. Angelo was up to the task and worked around a leadoff single by Rishi Prasad to complete the top half of the inning with 2 K’s and 0 runs. The Nationals turned to Cool Cam Espino to start the game and the Padres came out swinging. Connor Bouffard led off with a ringing double to set the tone and eventually came around to score as Brody Sheard and Black Jack Costa contributed with hits of their own. Cool Cam limited the damage but the Padres were able take a 1-0 lead in the home half of the inning.

Angelo came back out for his second inning of work and this time the Nationals were ready. Benjie Rotunno led off with a walk and promptly stole second base. Cool Cam followed with a solid single to center as Benjie motored home with the tying run. Josh Curtis, Brendan Pimental and Declan Carroll also reached base capped by another hit by Rishi as he continues to rake for the Nationals staking the team to a 3-1 lead. With the lead in hand Cool Cam strode to the hill for a second inning of work and pitched efficiently, holding the Padres scoreless.

As we moved to the top of the third the Nationals showed great discipline as Kevin, Logan, Benjie and Cam contributed with walks followed by timely ground out RBI’s by switch hitting George “Herman” Coombs and Josh Curtis. When the dust settled the Nationals were able to score 3 runs in total. Cool Cam went to work in the third looking to protect a 6-1 lead. Even though his struck out 3 more batters it was not before Dennis Moody slashed a RBI double to pull the Padres to within 6-2.

The Padres sent Nationals nemesis “BlackJack” Costa to the mound in the fourth and true to form held the Nationals at bay with a scoreless frame. The Nationals countered with Patrick Babola in the home half of the inning and he was promptly greeted by a single by “Sweet” Lou Rossetti. Angelo Mcnamara, Jackson Morgan and Noah Couture also contributed to the scoring as the Padres scored 2 and pulled to within 6-4.

“BlackJack” Costa worked in and out of trouble in the top of the fifth, striking out 3, leaving the bases loaded but did not allow the Nationals to score. On to the bottom of the fifth for the Padres final chance. Patrick Babola was in control and quickly recorded the first 2 outs. “BlackJack” then singled followed by James Flanagan slashing a triple to the right center field gap temporarily stopping the hearts of the National’s coaching staff and fan faithful. With the tying run at third base Patrick sealed the 6-5 win with his fourth K of the evening.

Another drama filled game for the Nationals and Padres that could have gone either way. Best of luck to both teams for the remainder of the season!
