A picture perfect Wednesday afternoon, 80 degrees with a
cool breeze set the stage for a National League matchup between the Dodgers and
Nationals. In the top of the first, Dodgers
stalwart Brayden O’Sullivan drew a walk but was left stranded by some quality
Nationals defense and pitching from rookie sensation Brendan Pimental. In the bottom of the first, the Nats put the
bats to work. With Rishi Prasad,Patrick
Babola, and Logan Dipilato setting the table and loading the bases, Josh Curtis
and George “Herman” Coombs had key hits to knock in three and give the Nats a 3-0 head start.
Brendan put up a solid second despite a hit by pitch to
Chris McLaughlin and a walk to Viren Kapoor.
He struck out two to end the inning.
There was more magic in the Nats bats in the second as Declan Carroll
drew a walk and Kevin Lee scorched a double.
Patrick walked to load the bases for Cool Cam Espino, who shrugged off
plate discipline to chop a 3-2 pitch that was over his head all the way to left
field. This incredible hit rendered his
coaches speechless, wondering “how’d he do it?” We’re glad he did. It scored three and gave the Nats a 6-0 lead.
A quiet third inning was highlighted by solid Dodgers
pitching by reliever Brayden O’Sullivan who retired the Nats side with no runs
scored. The Nats combined excellence of
Brendan and Logan struck out the side – Logan struck out two using only seven
pitches and Brendan ended his day with two plus innings of scoreless ball.
The fourth inning featured some great hitting. The Dodgers’ Wesley Axline smoked a line
drive to right that landed near the line. Nationals right fielder Rishi Prasad
raced to the ball and threw to second, incredible holding Wesley to a
single. Great defense! Great hit, too! In the bottom of the 4th, the Nats
had consecutive hits from Patrick and Cam before Logan drove them in with a
triple. The score was now 10-0 Nationals.
Great effort by both teams.
Best of luck to both teams for the rest of the season. The playoffs are just around the corner.
