Coolidge 1 was a literal hotspot for a double header divisional show down between the Cardinals and the Nationals.  With temps running in the high 80s, hitting and hydration were the words of the day.  After the Cards won the continuation game carried over from May 3rd.,the Nats were primed and ready for the second matchup.  Team leaders like Logan “The Express” Dipilato and Dec Carroll were keeping the team steady and ready.

The Nats bats were cooking from the get go.  Patrick Babola kick started it with a solid grounder turned double to short.  “Cool Cam” Espino matched with his own double, and it was time for The Logan Express to get on track.  Logan launched a two strike pitch to deep center, and motored home for an exciting three run home run.  What a hit!  Josh Curtis joined the hit party and singled before Cardinals pitcher Larry Pratte worked hard to get out of the inning.  The Nationals held a 3-0 lead.
Patrick brought his rocket right arm to the mound.  Tyler Jordan drew a walk but Patrick powered through the order with three Ks to end the inning.

The second inning started with more fireworks for the Nats.  Brendan Pimental hit a solid smash double to center followed by Kevin Lee’s hit, scoring Brendan.  Rishi Prasad took base and Patrick hit a hard grounder to the middle infield that looked like a hit.  Out of nowhere, Charlie McRae made an amazing backhand grab and threw to second for the out.  A run scored but this saved more damage.  Until the Nats hit brigade continued as Cool Cam and the Logan Express hit singles and doubles, respectively, scoring two more runs.  In the middle of the second inning, the Nats were up 8-0.

Meanwhile, Patrick “Picasso” Babola painted a gem in the second inning, striking out the side on only fourteen pitches.  Cardinals pitcher Kyle Dodge entered in relief.  Benjamin Rotunno returned to “Benbino” form in the top of the third, with a single and a stolen base.  Then, Nationals switch hitting virtuoso George “Cricket” Combs hit a single “off the bounce”, cricket style, down the third base line.  A unique moment – but yes, it’s a legal hit!  Sean Mitsis drew a walk, followed by walks by Brendan, Rishi, and a hit by Patrick to score four more runs and make the score 12-0 Nats.

Patrick pitched a scoreless third to keep the score at bay.  Kyle pitched an outstanding top of the fourth for the Cardinals.  He silenced the Nationals bats with no runs, despite another hit from the Benbino and George, who returned to “Herman” form by smashing a hit to left field (hitting left handed this time!)

The final inning came down to whether the Cards could ride the rally train to victory. It wasn’t meant to be, as Patrick finished the master piece with a scoreless inning for a complete game.  The score ended 12-0.  Great win for the Nats, who followed up the big win for the formidable Cards in the first game of this competitive series.  Best of luck to both teams down the stretch and in the playoffs!
