A Saturday night showdown at Dean Park between the first place Astros and fourth place Reds gave the fans in attendance everything they could have asked for.  An epic pitching duel was staged between the Astros Colin Desruisseaux and the Reds Nate Duerden, with the Reds big red right hander coming out ahead in the end.  The two pitchers combined for 27 strikeouts with both pitchers going 5 or more innings which resulted in a brisk pace of play and some tremendous baseball under the lights.

With both pitchers excelling on the mound there was little offense until the bottom of the fourth when the Astros got on the board.  Tim Donohoe got things started for the Astros with a single to right, he then stole second and came home on an RBI single by Colin Desruisseaux.

Astros 1-0

In the top of the fifth the Reds would finally break through against Desruisseaux who had up until that point retired 12 of the 13 Reds batters that he had faced.  Remarkably recording 10 strikeouts and cleanly fielding two grounders back to the mound for the two additional outs through the first four innings.  The only blemish on Desruisseaux’s line until that point was an infield single in the fourth by the suddenly hot hitting Reds rookie Jackson Porter.

The Reds got things going via a leadoff walk by Sean Renaghan.  Nate Duerden then helped himself out by smacking a double to center scoring Renaghan who blazed around the bases from first for the Reds first run.  Oliver Jonason got the Reds their second run when he would knock home Duerden with a single.  Desruisseaux got out of the jam by striking out three more Reds after an infield single by Matthew Mastrogiovanni and a hit batter.

Reds 2-1

The Reds Nate Durden made sure the Astros would not score again by striking out the side in the home half of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth the Reds would push across an insurance run for a 3-1 lead following a leadoff single by Jackson Porter.  Porter would move to second on a fielder’s choice and cross the plate on a single by Zander Campo.

Reds 3-1

In the bottom of the sixth the Reds would send Duerden back out to record one last out as he was closing in on his max pitch count.  He would not let the team down recording a strike out facing his final batter.  He left to a roaring ovation from all in attendance.  CJ Hallinan then took the mound to record the final two outs for the Reds putting to bed any possible comeback.

Final Reds 3-1

Game Notes:  Pitching was the name of the game Saturday night as all four pitchers that took the mound during the game combined for an amazing 31 strikeouts of the 36 outs recorded.

The Reds rookies continue to push the offensive attack with 5 of the Reds 7 hits on Saturday night.  Zander Campo and Jackson Porter both had 2 hits and Matthew Mastrogiovanni had the other.

After a hard fought and well-played game both teams look primed to play well going into the playoffs after finishing the regular season in the next few days.
