The highly anticipated continuation to this thriller of a game kept up to its billing. The Cardinals and Red Sox were squaring off one last time before the start of the playoffs In the original opener it was ace vs ace again as Anthony Santiago took the mound for the home team Cardinals and Ian Taylor started for the Red Sox.

The Sox loaded them up in the 1st on walks to Zak Salavardos and Jack Wharton followed by an Ian HBP. But Anthony would find his rhythm and get a fly out and K to end the inn. The Cardinals would strike first with hits from Sampath Katnalu, Owen Michalowski and Anthony Guarini that would plate 2.

End of 1st Cardinals 2-0

Anthony was dealing in the second with three straight K’s but Ian would return the favor in the bottom half with three of his own.

End of 2nd Cardinals 2-0

Sox would load them up again in the 3rd but a nice play at the plate by Torin Narva to tag the sliding Demetrios Athanasiou would end the inn. The Cards would strike for another in the bottom half with Amanda Kelmer drawing the BB and being driven in by Owen.

End of 3rd Cardinals 3-0

The Sox offense that was knocking at the door all game would explode in the 4th. Hits from Krew Duprey, Cam Coran, Ben “ten” Chamberlain and walks to Jackson Chamberlain and Demetrios would plate 3 runs. Hits from Max Caputo and a double from Jack Wharton would plate 3 more runs. To finish it off Ian would hit a mammoth triple to dead center to knock in one last run.

The Cardinals would get one back and the bottom of the inn on a Christian Prizio BB and some nifty steals followed by a nice hit ball on play by Shane Abramowitz that Ian would try and make a play on home on but Christian was safe.

End of 4th Red Sox 7-4

In the 5th the Cardinals would turn to their closer Des Nichols and he would keep the Sox off the board with 3 K’s.

In the bottom of the 5th the Cardinals made their comeback. Walks to Dillon Harrington and Amanda Kelmer got the rally started. A nice heads up play by Max Caputo to pick up a missed pop up and tag the advancing runner to second got the first out. A ground ball back to Max would plate a run but get the second out. Down to their last out came Owen who would hit it to Ian Taylor at SS. Ian made a great [play and throw but Owen would beat it out for his 3rd hit and plate the second run of the inn. Up stepped Anthony Guarini and with two strikes on him laced the game tying hit to right field. Torin Narva would follow with the potential game winner as he laced one to 2nd but Zak made a great plate to make the last out as time expired on the game.

End of 5th tied 7-7

In the continuation the Cards came back with Ian Desmond on the mound. Max promptly ripped one to SS but Anthony Santiago was there to get it and toss a strike to 1st for an out. Zak would walk and get himself into scoring position with a steal. Des got the next batter out on a pop to 1st. With two out and two strikes Ian Taylor delivered a great hit down the left field line to plate Zak. Krew followed with a scorching hit up the middle. Anthony again almost got to the ball but it skipped off him and then the runner to stay in the infield and keep Ian from scoring. Andrew Blanchette to ripped one at Anthony but again and snagged it and threw the strike to 1st to end the threat. Wow great job Anthony!

In the bottom of the 6th not to be out done the Sox flashed some playoff caliber D of their own. Jack Wharton would take the mound for the Sox to try and nail down the save. He got the first batter on a K. Des Nichols hit a nice ball that made its way past Ian at first but Andrew Blanchette made a great heads up play to back it up and he flipped it to the out stretched Ian for the 2nd out! As coaches we have been stressing the importance of backing up your teammates and never quitting on a play and watching that one unfold brought some smiles to the staff. On the next play Jack might have outdone them all as he fielded a tough bleeder rolling towards 3rd spun around and fired a missile to an outstretched Ian again just getting the runner and winning the game! Wow!

Final Red Sox win 8-7

Such a well played game all around. Two real tough teams that are going to be tough to play against as we start the playoffs this year. Good luck to everyone going forward!
