After a Tough Loss, The Keller Contracting Purple Pirates Bounce Back

It was a beautiful night for softball as the Masis Staffing Solutions Killer Lifeguards hosted the Keller Contracting Purple Pirates. Of course, nice weather is great for everyone but the batters and catchers playing at Dean #2 at that time of night. Having not seen it much this spring, we shouldn’t complain but the sun can be a real nuisance for the first half of the game.

Ace Maddy Bentley took the circle to start the game for the Killer Lifeguards. She was true to form for the first 2 innings with 4 K’s, 2 BB, a ground out, and pop fly out. The only hit came off the bat Phoebe Forgues, who singled in the bottom of the second. The Purple Pirates stranded runners on third in both the first and second innings.

The Purple Pirates started their own ace, Emma Olson who had a solid first inning. Both Maddy Bentley and Naomi Lee had singles for the Killer Lifeguards but Olson was able to get out of the jam by way of the K. In the top of the second inning, Gianna Leardi drew the leadoff walk and stole second. Notorious bat twirler, Shruti Sivashankar advanced Leardi to third on a single. On the next pitch, Shruti attempted to steal second. Catcher Julia Kurzontkowski came up firing, throwing a laser to Annie Cole who applied the tag with perfect execution but just missed the out at second. Olson followed by striking out her second batter of the inning. The Killer Lifeguards struck first with a 2-out RBI single by Ellie Sudnik. Olson was able to recover and get out of the inning with her third strikeout.

End of the 2nd: Masis Staffing Killer Lifeguards 1 – Keller Contracting Purple Pirates 0

In the top of the third, Naomi Lee took over pitching duties as the Purple Pirates looked to answer. Maria Campaniello started off the inning with a walk. After Campaniello stole second, Lyla Rose moved her to third with a single. Rose swiped second putting 2 runners in scoring position. Emma Olson helped her own cause with a hard hit double scoring both Maria and Lyla. Annie Cole capped off the 3 run inning with a 2-out RBI of her own.

In the bottom of the third, Julia Kurzontkowski took the ball for the Purple Pirates. The Killer Lifeguards would respond plating 2 runs on RBI singles by Phoebe McKenna and Shruti Sivashankar. After a mound visit, Julia was able to settle down and regain composure retiring the next two batters with a strike out followed by a pop fly out to end the inning.

End of the 3rd: Masis Staffing Killer Lifeguards 3 – Keller Contracting Purple Pirates 3

Anna Thomas came on in relief in the top of the fourth and the Purple Pirates led off the with a bang. Phoebe Forgues hit a towering shot down the left field line, got on her horse and was into third with a standup triple. After Thomas struck out the second batter, Maria Campaniello worked her second walk and managed her second steal of the game. With runners in scoring position, Lyla Rose hit a bomb to straight away center scoring Phoebe and Maria.

With a 2-run lead, Emma Olson returned to pitch the final inning recording two more strikeouts and a ground out to end the game and secure the win for the Purple Pirates.

Other notable plays from the purple pirates, came from Jordyn Myers and Sydney Ash who did a spectacular job backing up first base preventing additional runs from scoring.

An all-around great competitive game played and coached by both teams. Looking forward to the doubleheader rematch in June!
